Why the Warm-Up Is Not Optional

The warm-up is the part of class most people want to skip and the part that quietly determines how well — and how safely — the rest of the session goes. A proper warm-up raises your core temperature, increases blood flow to working muscles, primes your nervous system to fire quickly, and takes your joints through the ranges you're about to load. Cold tissue under a heavy or fast load is exactly the recipe for a tweak.

There's a performance argument too, not just a safety one. A well-warmed athlete produces more force, moves through fuller ranges, and hits better positions from the first rep. The warm-up isn't wasted time before the 'real' work; it's the on-ramp that makes the real work productive.

General Then Specific

A good warm-up moves through two stages. The general phase raises your temperature and gets blood moving — a few minutes of easy rowing, biking, jumping rope, or simple calisthenics until you're breathing a little harder and lightly sweating. This is non-negotiable and shouldn't be rushed.

The specific phase then rehearses the exact movements of the day at low intensity. Squatting today? Do bodyweight squats and empty-bar squats through a full range. Snatching? Run through the positions with a PVC pipe or empty bar. This primes the precise motor patterns and ranges you're about to demand under load. Skipping straight to a working weight without this rehearsal is how technique breaks down on the first heavy rep.

Dynamic Over Static Before Training

One of the most useful things sports science has clarified is when to stretch. Long static stretching — holding a stretch for thirty seconds or more — before explosive or heavy training can temporarily reduce your power output and doesn't reduce injury risk the way people once believed. It has its place, but that place is generally not right before you try to lift heavy or jump.

Before training, favour dynamic mobility: controlled, active movements that take joints through their range — leg swings, walking lunges with a twist, arm circles, spider-man lunges, banded shoulder pass-throughs. These warm the tissue, groove the ranges, and leave your nervous system switched on rather than dialled down. Save long static holds and relaxed stretching for after training or on their own, when the goal is to build range rather than to prepare for power.

The Mobility That Actually Matters in CrossFit

You don't need to chase mobility everywhere. A handful of areas unlock the majority of CrossFit movements, and they're where your limited mobility time is best spent:

If you can squat to depth with an upright torso and lock a bar out overhead with a stable, comfortable position, you have enough mobility for the vast majority of what CrossFit will ask. Diagnose your specific limiters — usually one or two of the areas above — rather than spreading thin attention across everything.

Making Warm-Ups Efficient

The best warm-up is the one you'll actually do, so it needs to be efficient. Ten to fifteen focused minutes is plenty for most sessions — a few minutes general, a few minutes specific mobility for your known limiters, and a few minutes rehearsing the day's movements. You don't need a forty-minute mobility routine; you need the right ten minutes.

Consistency beats complexity. An athlete who does a simple, targeted warm-up every single day will move better and stay healthier than one who does an elaborate routine occasionally and skips it when they're busy. Build a short, repeatable sequence around your personal tight spots and make it as automatic as putting on your lifting shoes.
